In September 1781, French & American troops camped in Williamsburg at Archer's Hope & Jockey's Neck, including Conservancy Point. On September 28, 1781, 16,000 of these soldiers marched on Yorktown, where they defeated Cornwallis's British regulars and Hessian mercenaries, and won independence for the United States of America.
